21 Sep Breaking Down a Style: What to Play and When to Play”
Performing jazz in a style that is appropriate for a particular piece is a challenge for young players. Using Count Basie’s classic arrangement of Sweet Georgia Brown, our performers will explain how and why they make musical choices. While their choices are often specific to the Basie style, they will also talk about how they make choices in many other styles. Rhythm section players will describe how they decide what to play, when to play, and how to stay out of each other’s way. Wind players will talk about accents, articulations, note lengths and vibrato. At the end of the clinic, the performers will take the same arrangement and perform it in a more modern style,
Aimed primarily at performers, particularly middle school and above.
