“New Orleans-based pianist Kris Tokarski is quickly developing a reputation as a leading exponent of classic jazz traditions. From performances in intimate clubs, such as Snug Harbor and The Jazz Corner to international jazz festivals, including Umbria Winter Jazz Festival and The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, he artfully blends elements of the Harlem stride tradition, swing, bebop, and traditional New Orleans jazz.
Tokarski’s recorded output features an impressive cast of musicians both from New Orleans and across the country. It showcases him in a variety of trio settings, which relies heavily on the demanding piano styles pioneered by greats including Jelly-Roll Morton, James P. Johnson and Teddy Wilson. As renowned jazz journalist Michael Steinman notes on his debut album, “The disc is full of affection for the music and what it can give to us. It’s not about egotistic display; it’s about affection.”
Besides a busy performance schedule, Tokarski has a passion for teaching piano and jazz improvisation to music students who share a love for the jazz tradition. He has also served on faculty at the University of New Orleans.”
